I see this site as a kind of literary magazine, a personal litmag. On it I will post stories – stories complete, stories incomplete, fragments that may never be completed, perhaps a novel in short installments. When I say "story" I mean fiction and non-fiction, for I write both, and see both alike as stories. By which I mean: any writing whose primary purpose is not the provision of information. Not long ago I had an argument (well, a discussion) with a newspaper editor over an essay I'd written for him. We were going round in circles, and suddenly I saw the problem. "Here it is in a nutshell," I said. "Here's why we can't agree: you're in the business of providing information. I'm in the business of withholding information." The editor in question is a generous, insightful man, and the essay went in as I wrote it. Most editors are less understanding. Anyway, that's what story-writing is: the artful withholding of information.
